The Philosophy of Connection: Stoicism and Collaborative Horsemanship

Updated: Jun 20

Collaborative Horsemanship is more than a skill—it’s a mindset. At Cowboy Campus, Collaborative Horsemanship emphasizes the relationship between horse and human, built on trust, communication, and a willingness to meet each other halfway. As I’ve worked with riders and their horses, I’ve come to see how closely these principles align with Stoicism, a philosophy of life that teaches us to focus on what we can control, accept what we cannot, and act with wisdom and clarity.

What Stoicism Teaches Us About Horsemanship

Stoicism is often seen as a philosophy of resilience, but at its heart, it’s about building harmonious relationships—whether with other people or, in our case, horses. Here are a few Stoic principles that I believe directly apply to Collaborative Horsemanship:

1. Control What You Can, Accept What You Cannot

Epictetus famously said, “Make the best use of what is in your power, and take the rest as it happens.” When working with horses, it’s essential to focus on the things within your control: your timing, your body language, and your consistency. You cannot control how a horse will initially react, but you can set the stage for trust by remaining calm and clear in your requests.

2. Patience is Power

Marcus Aurelius reminds us, “You have power over your mind—not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” Often, frustration arises in training when we expect immediate results. Horses don’t operate on our timelines—they respond to patience, repetition, and understanding. True strength in horsemanship comes from your ability to stay composed, even when progress feels slow.

3. Kindness as a Virtue

Seneca advised, “Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for a kindness.” The same applies to horses. Kindness isn’t weakness—it’s the foundation of trust. When we approach horses with gentleness, we open the door for collaboration rather than conflict.

4. Prepare for Challenges

Stoics practiced a principle called premeditatio malorum, or “the premeditation of evils,” where they visualized potential challenges to prepare for them. In Collaborative Horsemanship, this translates to setting yourself up for success by anticipating your horse’s needs or hesitations. Whether it’s groundwork or saddle work, preparation creates confidence—for both you and your horse.

Before and After: The Transformation You Can Achieve

When you embrace these principles and apply them through Collaborative Horsemanship, the transformation is remarkable:

Before:

  • Frustration with your horse’s behaviour.

  • Tension during groundwork or riding.

  • Feeling like you’re fighting against your horse rather than working with them.

  • Inconsistencies in communication that lead to confusion.

After:

  • A trusting relationship where your horse feels safe and willing.

  • Clear, calm communication that fosters understanding.

  • Confidence in handling challenges with patience and clarity.

  • A soft, willing companion who responds to your requests with ease.

This is where you start.
